These are the notifications I get when someone joins one of my courses. This was for the Pinay Money Bootcamp course I first launched all the way back in 2017. That means for several years since I developed the course, new people are still joining and I’m getting money from it.

If there’s one thing that the pandemic showed us is that online learning is possible. Nalaman din natin na pwede pala tayo kumita kahit nasa bahay lang.

“Sino naman magbabayad sa knowledge ko?”

Madami. Sobrang dami. Join any group and you’ll find people who want to learn something new. They want to learn skills na pwede nila pagkakitaan. They need help. Kailangan mo lang na i-position ang sarili mo at sabihin sa mga tao kung ano ang kaya mong ituro.

You don’t need to be an expert in everything, you just need to know a little more than your target students.

Sure, anything and everything can be googled right now. But not everyone has the time, patience, and know-how to do extensive research. Yung iba, mas gusto na magbayad para makuha yung information na kailangan nila. They prefer real people teaching them how do things step-by-step.

And this is where you can help them. You can share your knowledge and expertise. By teaching what you know, the earning potential is unlimited. You can do it anytime and anywhere. A true digital entrepreneur’s dream.

I’m a self-confessed lazy introvert.

Lazy in the sense that I don’t like household chores and I can probably read a book the whole day and not have a headache after. I can finish one season of any series on Netflix with just a few pee breaks in between.

I love me-time. I love solitude. I love being alone.

But even though I’m lazy and introvert, I still make LOTS of money.

Because honestly, being rich doesn’t require you to have a specific kind of personality or skill. You can be smart, stupid, hustle-master, lazy, good, bad, asshole or kind - whatever!

To earn LOTS of money, you just have to uncover your money beliefs about why you can’t. Truth be told, these money stories are what define our decisions and actions. Either we believe we can or can not. It’s that simple.

I know many people wants to start a business but they’re shit scared. Some are brave enough and actually started already but realized it wasn’t that easy (true). “Can I really have the business that I love even though I am introvert and anxious?”

YES!!!

I’ve shared this #GeniusTip with the TWP bootcampers and I’m sharing them with you. One of the things I used to do to manage my anxiousness and shyness is by posting on a Facebook group that has only me as the member.

Name the FB group whatever you like, it’s just for you. Use this group to practice the tasks you find really hard and scary.

Post a selfie.
Do a live video.
Write your thoughts.
Post a sales copy.
Play with group settings.

Do everything and anything you want in your group.

I was so awkward when I first started doing videos in 2017. I’ll spent 3 hours or more just to shoot the video (no kidding). That didn’t include the time of editing it.

Not that I don’t know what to say but my thoughts are all jumbled up in my head and my mouth can’t catch up. Whenever I realized I was getting out of topic, I would restart the video over and over again. Exhausting!

Writing a blog post wasn’t easy either. I was very conscious of what other people may feel or think of me once they read the blog. I was censoring myself too much that it didn’t feel authentic anymore.

Then one fine day, I created a private Facebook group. The member was only me. I’ll do live video on that group. I’ll connect some apps and fiddle with the settings. I practice speaking on various topics. I don’t put make-up on or worry of what I’m wearing because, well, I’m the only member.

If you want to level it up, after a few weeks of practicing, I suggest add one confidante to join the group. She should be someone you trust and explain what it’s for. Then keep on doing things you used to do, knowing that your chosen person is going to see them. For sure you’ll puke.

After a few more weeks, start to do one of the things you’ve been practicing on your actual Facebook account. Now, the thought alone might make you hyperventilate but for sure you know that once you sent it out, it will be okay.

You’ve practiced for weeks (if not months). It’s like re-posting what you’ve already done dozens of time.

Practice always make things easier. By practicing, what scares us before become less scary overtime.

And I’m telling you this because I know as an introvert, you think there’s no way you can put yourself out there without puking and making a fool of yourself. I have these two blog posts written a while ago, I hope they give you some inspiration and courage:

Whatever personality you have, again, the main thing you need to work on are your money beliefs.
Do you think you have to be online all the time?
Do you believe that being wealthy is hard to achieve?
Do you think you need to be someone else to attract customers?

How would you know your money blocks? A simple exercise is to finish this sentence:

”I can’t be wealthy because __________.”

See what comes up.

What should you do then if you uncover your money blocks? Well, there are many ways to release them.

What sparks you? Is there anything that interests you or make you excited?

Now, my next question is, should you monetize your passion?

Some would say, don’t. They say if you mix passion with monetization, you’ll start hating your passion in the long run. That’s sad.

In a way that’s true. Let’s take myself as an example. I realize that blogging is one of my passions. I enjoy writing my thoughts, my experiences, and whatnots. I’ve been writing for years (and even published a book) and I’m not bored with it yet.

During the first few months of the pandemic, I decided to get some freelance writing gig. I was asked to write 1,500 - 2,000 words per day of various topics. I thought it will be easy but I was soooo wrong. I hated it!!!

I love writing but I realized that writing with deadlines and topics I don’t care about is not FUN. And no matter how much I get paid, I knew it wasn’t sustainable for me. So after 1 and half months of that writing gig, I quit.

Another example, growing up, my son keeps on saying he wanted to be a chef. For 11 years or so, that’s what he kept on saying. Since he was 12 years old, he started to cook and bake whatever he likes. Pasta, cookies, cakes, menudo, everything he fancies. I’ll buy the ingredients, he cooks.

Now that he’s 14, he said that although he likes cooking, he doesn’t want to do it everyday. He can’t imagine having his own restaurant or making a living out of cooking. Well, I’m glad he figured it out now and not when he’s in his 2nd year of college.

“LynJoy, are you suggesting then not to mix passion and money?”

Let me say this, burnt out in business is not because you’re monetizing your passion but because you’re doing other things in business that you actually don’t like.

You’re probably obsess with baking and can bake thousand of cookies and cakes in a day. You don’t feel tired nor stress doing what you love so you decided that you’ll start a baking business. Monetize your passion, right?

However, in business, production is just one part of the business. There’s sales and marketing, finance, tax, customer service, and people management. And I doubt if you’re good nor interested to any of these things.

This is when stress kicks in.

The Wealthy Pinay is a passion business for me. How am I doing it then?

I started The Wealthy Pinay because I wanted to share what I know about the law of attraction, money blocks, and money mindset. I would write about these topics non-stop and I was enjoying it.

Then, when I started monetizing, I started to feel bad. Not because it’s wrong (one shouldn’t feel guilty earning when they’re providing value) but because I don’t like social media. I don’t like marketing. I’m a self-confessed introvert who wants to be alone with her thoughts and just write.

What have I done then that allowed me to have sold-out book, speaking gigs, and paid training and seminars?

I stopped thinking about the money.

Yup, I stopped thinking too much of what I’m earning and start focusing on what I do best - helping. Overtime, I realized that marketing is easy. Just share something valuable and ask for the sale.

Once your income allows it, start delegating tasks that really stress you. Pay someone to create your website or hire a cousin who can act as your social media manager.

I also recommend not to let your passion business be your only source of income (at least at first). You can sell other stuff, be employed, provide other service and earn from them. In that way, you can do your passion business without worrying if income is enough to pay your bills.

Overtime, your skills and confidence will grow and things that used to stress you become much easier to handle. I used to prepare months for a workshop but nowadays, I can prepare all the content and materials within a day or two.

I’m now glad of starting a business out of my passion. And you can have that, too. You just have to have faith and start.

We can all agree that this Corona virus turns the whole world upside down. Who knew it will be this big? Borders closed, flights cancelled, businesses shutting down. Earlier this month, I was happy we finally have a complete roster of nail technicians just in time for graduation and summer season. I have so many activities planned for March and April. My calendar is full of talks, events, and summer escapades. But just like Thanos' snap, everything vanishes. 

From optimism and excitement, to uncertainty and worry.

When the news broke out that all non-essentials businesses will close down, I was worried. I'm thinking of our lost income and also worried about our staff. Paano na sila? I'll be honest. I was initially hesitant to pay their full March salary when there was no income coming in. As a business owner, we will still need to pay the commercial rent and that alone will have a big dent on our finances. We also have many obligations and bills to pay. I'm not Sharon Cuneta rich you know.

Amidst fear and scarcity, I recognized that it was just my money blocks taking over. My intuition tells me I shouldn't be afraid, and now more than ever I need to practice my abundance mindset. When my husband and I talked about paying their salary in full, it was an easy decision, "We need to help them now. We'll figure out our next move in the coming weeks." We also applied DOLE financial assistance for them.

I know from experience that being generous with kind intentions, even when you feel scarce, attracts so much in return. Channeling our abundance mindset proves that we have faith. Faith that everything is being taken care of. Faith that our decisions and actions are guided. Faith that we're safe and blessed.

What have I learned from this virus?

For sure a lot of us had so many realizations. Can you relate to any of this?

1. Savings is VERY important

Saving money is always a good idea but most of us rarely do. Excuses such as low salary, high cost of living, many obligations, etc are the main reasons why most Pinoys can't even keep 20 pesos a day (although they can afford to buy phone credits or cigarettes daily). But after this pandemic, I'd like to think we finally understood the importance of saving for emergencies. 

Personally, I would increase my savings further and ensure it's not tied up with any investment. It should be liquid and easily accessible when required. 

2. We CAN live without most things

Covid-19 proves that we can live without most things - the restaurants, the movie houses, the salons, the malls. I used to say that I'll never miss any dentist appointment while I'm still on dental braces but you know what? I have so many gaps between my teeth now and who knows when I'll see my dentist again but that's okay. With so many issues happening around the world, my jagged teeth are the least of my concern. 

3. And there are things that we CAN'T live without

If you're still alive, money is important to have. Most people who violate the government's quarantine instructions are those who direly need to work for money. Without earning, they won't have food. Unless you've grown a small farm or have access to the sea for fishing, most of us need money to buy the very basic stuff like food. That's the reality of life.

Some people might say that the internet is important but honestly, after living without it for 1 month after we move back from Dubai, I can say it's doable. Difficult but you won't die.

4. Social Media can be toxic

I kinda know that social media can be nasty but I now realized how dangerous it can truly be. If we're not careful, we can easily be sucked into this black hole called Facebook and Twitter. I know because I was there. For the first few days after lockdown, I was glued on my phone for 16+ hours. My only break was when I'm cooking, taking a shower or sleeping. 

This is unusual for me since I value productivity. Time is money. If you deduct the number of hours we spend on sleeping, we roughly have 16 hours to spend on things that matter to us, and I don't think social media will solve our problems. We really have to be discerning of what we feed our brain.

I'm not saying I quit checking my phone, I still do. But I set my intention to do more productive things while in quarantine. I have applied for a VA job, I'm finally attending some online courses which was on my 'to do' list for months now, I'm writing often, and I'm polishing the Pinay Money Bootcamp.

Speaking of Pinay Money Bootcamp...

Just before this virus took over, I was planning to launch the all-new Pinay Money Bootcamp. Well, this is actually version 3.0 of my previous TWP Bootcamp and Zero to CEO courses. Instead of helping everyone to start their dream business, I decided to focus on startup female entrepreneurs who want to share their skills and talent by creating their own business.

You see, The Wealthy Pinay started as a passion. I have a message to share and I want to teach the 'secret' to others. Over time, as the community grew, I was able to sell online trainings and courses. Even with a small list and audience, those who benefited the most from my free content decided to pay to learn more.

Why am I passionate about encouraging Pinays to start their own business?

Running their own business is not for everyone and I don't want you to quit your job now if you don't feel ready energetically. However, with what's happening right now, we can all agree that having a second or third source of income is very useful. You can still continue being employed while simultaneously building your own empire. 

If you're a stay-at-home mom, I would say you have an advantage in terms of time management. You don't need to worry about the commute or being asked by your boss to stay back. 

I know women can do it. We can multitask well. We're heart-centered yet strong-willed if circumstances arise. We are innately an efficient CEO.

And you know my best prediction ala Madam Auring? Online-based businesses will be the next big thing here in the Philippines. It's a new concept for many Filipinos and the market is not saturated yet like other Western countries. Whatever your business idea is, you can put them on an online platform and be global!

Who will benefit more from Pinay Money Bootcamp?

If you are a freelancer (makeup artist, VA, graphic designer, web designer, consultant, accountant, elementary tutor, etc), have you ever thought of labeling yourself as a business owner? Instead of working for others as an employee, will you consider creating your own brand?

The motto "it's better to give than to receive" has been embedded in my core so deeply that it's hard to shake off. I would always pay when dining out. I would never ask for help. I feel terribly guilty saying no.

If you're like me, the simple mantra "I serve I deserve" will dramatically shift your self-worth. Receiving graces is not a bad thing. Accepting help should always be welcomed. Charging for your service and work not only helps you but also empowers your client. 

I'm still not sure if I'll launch Pinay Money Bootcamp now or wait until this pandemic is over. A part of me says to wait but there's another part thinks that you, yes you, can kickstart your entrepreneurial journey now while everything seemed to slow down. You have more time to focus and think.

Nowadays, the term boss is thrown around quite easily.

“Boss, pakitabi yang trike mo.”
“Boss, pahiram nga ng lighter.”
“Boss, magkano yan?”

This post is not about if you want to be called a boss or not.
Rather, it’s about being able to LEAD.

If you want to start and create anything – a business, a community, a gang – whether you accept it wholeheartedly or not, you must LEAD. For a group, business or community to grow and thrive, someone needs to hold it together and ensure that it’s going into the ‘right’ direction.

There is a stereotype that a leader is someone who’s charismatic, extrovert, and has a strong personality. He is someone who can stand on stage and persuade his team to follow his ‘vision’. He is smart, articulate and knows how to get what he wants. A leader is an alpha male or alpha female.

For the longest time, I was an employee. I was a great team member. My boss can give me a task and I’ll complete it with flying colors. You see, in a company set-up, I don’t see myself as a boss nor a leader. I might have people reporting to me but I treat everyone as my equal. I don’t act like a boss.

However, deep inside, I know that I can lead.
I’m not easily persuaded by someone else’s opinion.
I take on responsibility and tasks and own them.
I take care of my team, my siblings, my friends.
I know that if people around me need help, I’ll be there.
I realized that I have the ability to turn an idea into reality.

The problem is, people around me think otherwise. I might feel like a leader, but they just see me as someone who follows.

My boss keeps on telling me that I have to take my stand and be more firm.
That I have to say NO more often.
That I have to network and be out there.
That I shouldn’t let others treat me like their personal assistant.

So you see, the way I see myself (I’m a leader) is not how others see me (I’m a follower).
Does it bother me though?

HELL NO.

I don’t give a sh*t to be honest. The reason I created The Wealthy Pinay is to inspire everyone to live the life they’ve imagined for themselves. A life that they really want and not what others expect them to be.

I want everyone to live their life with ease. To have FREEDOM – of time, of money, of choice. To do things that make them alive rather than out of necessity.

And while slowly creating that FREE life, I want you to be true to yourself. Of course, you will improve and be wiser and better, but honor your true YOU.

Be the rich and wealthy person you want to be.
Wealthy and sexy.
Wealthy and loves ukay-ukay.
Wealthy and flashy.
Wealthy and loves cat.
Wealthy and a vintage motorcycle collector.
Wealthy and a volunteer.

You can LEAD without changing your truth.

Based on this article, there are 10 signs that you are a leader and don’t even know it. It talks about having an open mind, being approachable, being genuinely caring and so on.

I used to think that being a leader is pointless. It’s the last thing on my mind and have no desire to pursue it. My mindset changed though when I started to dream. For everyone to believe that they can live the life they imagined for themselves, I need to inspire them. They need to hear my message. I have to prove that it’s possible.

The number one core principle about leadership:
Serve others before yourself.

Today I lead people for a living and mentor them to take a leadership role too. It’s a very fulfilling role and I enjoy every second of it.

How can you be a leader if you haven’t been one before?

1. Be a role model.

More than being a leader, you have to think and act as a role model. Whether you like or not, you will be emulated. They’ll look up to you, copy your style, and try to follow your footsteps

Your job is to role model the right behaviors. The way you talk, the decisions and actions you make, and most of all, how you treat other people.

If possible, share your ideas, business financials, and vision with your team. Even if you think they won’t understand. Respect and let them feel valued.

2. Inspire

Get stuff done. You can’t be a leader if people can’t see results or you can’t paint the end result in a way that is inspiring that they would like to take action.

Share your struggles and mistakes so others can relate. Vulnerability is not a sign of weakness rather can be your greatest strength.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

You can have the greatest idea in the world but without a group of people rallying behind your idea, then achieving your goal will be difficult. Leaders realize that they can’t do their job without the support of people who have the skills they are lacking.

It’s ok to ask for help.

4. Delegate tasks thoughtfully

You may feel like you can do everything but leaders delegate tasks thoughtfully. Being a leader means holding the vision together for the team – you need to inspire and empower. That would be a challenge if you try to do everything and be everywhere.

How to delegate thoughtfully? Assign tasks that support the interests of each team member. When you go to a negotiation meeting, invite one of your team members who like to be a sales rep to join you. Later on, you can easily delegate this task to her/him.

5. Be ready for hard conversations.

A leader consistently acknowledges and praises her team. Praising is important and so is having the tough conversations when someone isn’t giving their best. 

On the other hand, you might see someone giving their best efforts but still fail in achieving the required results. How to fix this? Be ready to talk to them and then decide if they are the right fit for the role.

We all know that the best learning is done under pressure or in uncomfortable circumstances. Don’t try to be the leader who wants to high-five and please everyone. They will never grow if you do.

6. Look people in the eye.

Our self-worth grows if someone gazes into our eyes in a positive context. When we talk and the person look at us intently, we feel worthy of their attention.

If we feel this way, you bet the person you’re talking to will feel the same if you look at their eye. Eye contact is your way of saying, “I’m listening”. And if you truly listen and understand, you gain the person’s trust.

7. Know there will be few people who won’t like you.

And that’s fine. I told Gibson the other day, “I’m looking forward to have my first basher!“
He looked at me like I lost both my eyes and said, “WHATTTT!!!!???!!“

You see, having strong critics (pinaganda ko lang yung tawag, hater talaga yan ) means you achieve a certain level of success. As we grow and make a bigger impact, we attract all kinds of people, and inevitably, even haters.

If you have not accomplished anything, then, almost certainly, nobody would be paying enough attention to give you criticism. I always say that my dream is to be a household name. And it is impossible that the 108 million Filipinos will all love me. You will be loved and you will be hated.
That’s a fact and embrace it.

8. Be clear about what you stand for.

People follow you for what you believe in. Be firm with what you stand for and don’t try to stand for everything.

I keep on saying that the world needs more heart-centered leaders. If you’re currently helping now kahit walang wala ka, kung nagvo-volunteer kahit pagod ka sa work, kung may puso ka na magbigay at magturo, I highly encourage you to reach your highest potential.

Don’t shy away from monetary success. Strive to be heard. Stand tall.
Be a leader and make our country and our world a better place.

Once upon a time, I wished to have a business. I dreamt of having the financial freedom that most successful people are talking about.

But there were quite a few problems.

• I have no capital (major!)
• I’m employed (meaning I’m busy and don’t have time)
• I don’t know which business to go into (unless watching tv can be profitable)

I have so many limiting beliefs about my capability and capacity to be a successful business owner. Were these reasons valid? In my mind, they were very real. I mean, I had no money, that’s a fact and I can’t fake it.

Later on, I realized that these limiting beliefs were the only hindrance that prevents me to design the life I want. Having no money, being too busy and the “I don’t know where to start” attitude are just excuses that we tell ourselves because we’re freaking scared to step out of our comfort zone.

My friend, if you feel that entrepreneurship is something you want to do, then do it. If you’re an over-thinker like me, you will have thousand and one ideas and considerations – a long to-do list that should be completed before launching.

• Talk to a lawyer
• Hire a business/franchise consultant
• Firm up the logistics/supply chain process
• Consult with a food tech
• Apply for a POS machine
• Should we incorporate?
• Hire an accountant

As they say, preparation is the key to success. I want everything to be perfect and start strong! This is not the usual mom-and- pop store because the vision is to be one of the leading franchise companies in the Philippines.

BUT…

I had a realization the other day. The desire to be perfect cripples us to actually move forward. I want all aspects of my business covered, documented and flawless that I end up planning, conceptualizing, and planning again. It was never-ending.

It dawned on me that we’re just procrastinating. We’re making excuses in disguise for it to be perfect. We’re focusing on even the tiniest details and thinking so way ahead that we’re not making actual progress.

This reminds me of my conversation with one TWP student. Let’s call her Jane.

You know, Jane has taken up several short courses in business, enrolled in different business programs, and has done many feasibility studies. She loves reading business books and quite ready to take the plunge.

After listening to her idea for the nth time, I can’t help but told her frankly, “Why don’t you start? It seems everything is planned out and you just need to roll.” She then replied that she doesn’t have enough capital. She hasn’t found the right location. She still needs to finalize the operating manual, the business plan, the employee handbook and so on and so forth. She has so many reasons and you and I know that they’re just excuses – but she doesn’t know that.

After several weeks of mentoring, she finally had the courage to start her business. Most of the time we just need someone to kick our ass guide us to start moving

And the paralyzing fear that happened to Jane is happening to me. Glad that I have the self-awareness required to identify my own self-sabotages. I recognized that my perfectionist/in-control tendencies are delaying our launch. I have to remind myself constantly that DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT.

Besides, we’re in PH for more almost 2 months now, two months of no income. Although we have saved for our permanent move, it doesn’t mean we don’t need to start earning soon.

So my friend, my advice to you and to myself: Stop Overthinking and Start Doing.

This has been the mantra of The Wealthy Pinay since the beginning. For more than a year, I keep on telling you to dream, believe and take lots of actions.

For so many months, I consistently share blog posts and videos that hopefully will encourage and inspire you to figure out that ‘freedom’ that most people aspire.

By now, I’m expecting that there’s significant progress with your life. Either you got promoted, increased your savings or something great had happened. I won’t be surprised because I know how powerful it is to have someone cheering you on and keeping your spirit high.

In my high school yearbook, I mentioned that my dream is to be a teacher. After college, my first regular job is actually a college instructor. How amazing, right? 
But soon I realized, I don’t have a passion for teaching. It’s not what I’m called to do.

Fast forward to 15 years later, I am actually teaching again. But instead of data programming and information science, I’m teaching women on how they can be wealthy. I’m teaching about money mindset and business marketing because I realized this is what I’m good at. 

So yeah, my high school yearbook turned out to be true.

Do you know what else is true? That I wasn’t born an entrepreneur. I didn’t spend my childhood selling yema or candies in school. I’m shy to talk to people and no one will ever think that I’ll be doing what I’m doing right now.

I spent my adult life working just like what everybody is doing. This is what’s expected of us, right? Graduate from college, find a decent job, get married, have kids, send kids to college, and hope that our kids can support us when we’re old.

But after the ‘have kids’ part, I aspire for more. I want my children to have an option to start their business and not just assume the role of an employee. I wanted to have my own car, own house, and lots of savings in my bank account. I wanted my parents to experience travelling and give them a good life. I started dreaming.

Unfortunately, those dreams didn’t materialize. After more than 10 years of being an OFW, nothing happened. Sure, there might be few nice things here and there but you can’t consider that as being wealthy. 

Until in 2015.

I didn’t win the lottery. I didn’t join any networking. I didn’t become smarter or more ‘blessed’. 

The only thing that changed is I took ACTION. I wanted a lot of things to happen but I’m not actively working on achieving them. In my mind I’m thinking, “Once I’m less busy, I’ll do that.” “I’ll start saving once my income increases.” “I will start a business when I have enough money.”

Everybody wants MORE. More money, more success, more freedom. But how come when an opportunity or an idea to achieve this ‘MORE’ presented itself, we hesitate? 

I think we know what needs to be done. We know that we need to take action, we need to learn a few things, we need to have courage. WE ALL KNOW THAT.

The problem is we are overwhelmed. 
– I don’t know where to start
– Will the idea work?
– What if I fail?

Sabi nila entrepreneurs are born not made so most of the stories we hear are successful people who started doing their stuff since childhood. So parang naiisip natin, “Well, do I have it in me to run a highly profitable business? Baka delusional lang ako.“

• Lifestyle mogul Martha Stewart built her first business (catering) in her mid-thirties. She was nearly fifty before signing a deal to develop the Martha Stewart Living magazine. 
• Vera Wang did not even begin designing clothes professionally until the age of 39. Before that age, Wang was a fashion journalist. 
• Reid Hoffman founded LinkedIn at the ripe old age of 35. While Hoffman began his professional life in academia, he soon decided that entrepreneurship held up more opportunities to change the world.

I can give you more examples but you get the drift. Starting a business doesn’t need to start when you’re 20 or 30. You can do it in your 40s, 50s, heck even when you’re retired. I can imagine the wisdom of a 70-year-old and how I’ll pay attention once they share everything they’ve learned about life, their career, their business. A retired goldsmith can start a business by teaching newbie goldsmiths about the trade and tricks of the job. Can you imagine being a mentor and at the same time earning from it??

How I wish I can convince you right here and now that the life you want is within your reach. It’s so near that I can already smell it. But I know that the decision to make a change starts from you. 

You might have a best friend who keeps on making bad decisions with men and your advices are always just thrown out of the window. She said she’d learned her lesson but after a few months, she’s back with the same douche dude. I understand that you’re frustrated because you care and wants her to be truly happy but how can you do it when she’s not helping herself?

I can only tell you so much but in the end, it’s your decision. I only hope you’ll start sooner. I have mentees who now have their businesses and life has changed drastically 100x better (their words) and it’s because they took actions and followed my formula step-by-step.

For several years now, this is what I’m striving for.

Freedom to do the things I love.
Freedom to afford these experiences.
Freedom to do them on my own time.

I was really depressed in late 2014. I wanted to quit my job, I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, my life became boring and I wanted change. An opportunity came to work for another company so I jumped in – maybe this is the change I needed.

After 6 months into my new job and company, I’m depressed again. Sure, work is more manageable, salary and benefits are better but how come I was still feeling depleted?
That’s when I realized that I need to create the change I’m looking for. 

I focused on my mental health and start manifesting consciously. For 3 years, I keep on asking myself, “How can I have the freedom that I want?” “What does this freedom looks like?” “How do I know if I achieve it?”

And in that 3 short years, I created a lot of things – published a book, created several businesses, 2 blogs, and The Wealthy Pinay. But can I be truthful here? 

All these things ain’t easy. I didn’t wake up one day feeling I can conquer the world and then really conquered it. It’s more like, “Yes! I can do this” to “What am I getting myself into?” 

The book didn’t just write on its own. Planning a business is exciting and fun until you start building it (and working on it). Continuously creating content for TWP is not easy when you’re a mother, a wife, and you spend 12 hours a day at your daytime job. None of it is easy.

But I love it and I want more of this life! You might be aware that this June 2019, the family and I will go back to the Philippines for good. It’s a big leap of faith. We are leaving behind a comfortable lifestyle in Dubai to start something unfamiliar. Am I scared? I don’t want to sound cocky, but no. My faith is bigger than my fear.

But is it easy to start a business?

Well, based on experience and as I have seen from hundreds of startups, planning and starting a business is easy. For sure you’ve seen it too. Friends and family start selling stuff on Facebook. Actively promoting their product and service. Your newsfeed is flooded for weeks with their updates and then gradually… pffftttt! They’re gone.

Do you know what happened? They realized that selling is difficult. That promoting it on Facebook won’t translate to sales. And the greatest realization of all – they are actually shy and introvert to ask people to buy from them.

How do I know these reasons? Because I was damn one of them.

A newbie Lyn Joy started selling and promoting stuff but realized that ‘selling’ and ‘promoting’ are things that she didn’t want to do. She likes creating and solving problems but selling, no. The result? No one noticed her except friends and family who felt pity.

Unfortunately, no matter how great your products or services are, customers won’t buy from you in a heartbeat. I learned it the hard way. Our nail salon used to have zero sales in a day. It’s disheartening when rent and salaries still need to get paid.

It took a lot of training, trial and errors, and mindset shifts before I started to see change. Nowadays, our gross sales would be more than 100k monthly. My first book almost sold out in less than 3 months. The Wealthy Pinay website attracts thousands of views every month.

Can it also happen to you? Can you build a business from scratch and earn 6 figures a month? My honest answer?

It depends. It depends on how bad you want to make it work. It depends if you want change in your life. It depends if you’re willing to work hard for it and hustle like you never hustled before.

Does it require you to be intelligent, smart, good in numbers, extrovert, rich, have a big network, etc.? My honest answer again – NO. I don’t have any of that. You know my strengths? I am dreamer, a believer, and an action-taker. That’s it.

And I’m never like this before. I don’t necessarily consider myself as risk taker rather I’m so practical and logical that I would think twice before taking any big risks. But as I said earlier, I learned to have faith in God and I trust Him more. The fact alone that an idea is seeded in my mind, it means He’s guiding me and if I won’t take action because of my fear then where’s my faith?

Marketing has so many areas that are all interconnected yet can be stand-alone strategy for your business. For today’s lesson, let’s discuss Persuasion.

Persuasion: is something meant to get you to do or believe something

The definition looks dodgy, right? Persuasion has a scammy feel to it. It’s like when you go to a shop and persuaded to buy something that you ended up hating. So, as an entrepreneur, should we not persuade our customers to buy from us? Should we just build our business and let them see how amazing it is?

My answers to the last 2 questions – no and no.

As a heart-centered, soul-centered, introvert business owner, I understand that marketing is part of entrepreneurship that we don’t really want to do.

We are doing our business to help others, to bring money in our household, to connect, and we want to change the world. We believe that our offer is something unique, or what the world needs, or can change lives. Isn’t that enough for our customers to buy from us?

The truth: NO. You might have the best product or service in the world but if your ideal customer can’t see its value, then expect to hear crickets. And I don’t want you to ever experience it because I’ve been there and I know the feeling. The humiliation, the pain, the sadness of creating something and no one appreciates.

I learned a lot from my experiences and I’ve done lots of trial and error. Selling and Marketing are really Science. You need to understand your customer’s psychology to ensure your business’ success.

Consider this as your crash course to Marketing Psychology 101. Learn how to get people open their wallets and hand you their money (in an ethical, legit and honest way).

1. Prestige

Your customer doesn’t want to be healthy. She wants to be sexy.
Your customer doesn’t want a nice lantern. She wants a lantern that will make that judgy neighbor jealous and say, “Oh my gosh, what a beautiful, amazing Christmas lantern she has. She must be really rich.”

THAT is what they really want.

One of our most predominant human desire is to be better than everyone else. We want to increase our social status. When offering your product or service, include on your sales pitch how your offer can elevate your customer’s prestige status.

Use words or phrases that include prestige boosters on your sales pitch, for example:

1. “Have the luxury that you deserve.”
2. “A special gift only for our top 10 buyers!”
3. “Exclusive to members only.”

2. Believability

Your customer should believe that your product or service can solve their problems. And how can you communicate it to them? By giving real testimonials of other consumers who bought your product or service and had a great feedback.

Believability is all about making them believe you and believing that your offer can be beneficial to them.

How it works:

1. Show approval from experts
2. Endorsements from celebrities
3. Approval from past and current customers
4. Share your own result

3. Curiosity

When something doesn’t make sense, we’re drawn on it. Our brain wants to know a lot of things and if there’s any information gap then it’s our nature to solve it.

You have to make them curious to continue looking around. Make sure that your sales page, social media posts, advertisements, and other marketing copy has a curiosity hook and inspire them to keep reading.

Make sure to tickle their imagination that create a feeling of:

1. “I must know what happens next!”
2. “This can’t be true.”
3. “What does that even mean?”

4. Urgency

Might be weird, but we all know how we want more when we know that it’s the last piece of the lot. Urgency works when the things we want is of limited quantity or will be gone after a certain time.

Customers also want instant gratification. No wonder those ‘lose 10 pounds in 1 week’ and ‘earn 15k in 2 days’ attract lots of attention.

Word of caution though: avoid creating fake urgency. There’s nothing more yucky than marketers who keep on saying ‘last 30 minutes’, ‘2 spots left’ or ‘50% off only today’ and then see the same advertisement after a few days or so. You’ll lose your credibility and lose your customers fast.

5. Connection

One of the most powerful of all. You can create an amazing website, you can have great offer, you can have the greatest pitch, but if your intended customers can’t relate to your message then all is lost.

Connection is when your customers can relate to you. They can relate to your dreams. They can relate to what you’re saying. They can relate to your problems. And how can they relate to you? You have to share your flaws too.

No one is perfect. But if you are, then you can alienate people. Not that they are jealous, but they can’t relate to your ‘perfectness‘.

Have you heard of Pratfall Effect? In essence, it states that people who are perfect can seem threatening, but people who are imperfect are safe and hence easier to truly like. When people appear to be a little flawed, other human beings are more attracted to them. They are more interesting, more relatable. And that’s what you want to have – connection.
